Sharp stabbing pains in lower back on the left side?

It comes whether I am sitting, standing or laying down. It comes on intermittently for 3-4 seconds. the best way for me to describe the pain is that it is so excruciating that its paralyzing. Then as quick as it comes it disappears. It happened at least 25 times today. What could be causing this.
