when can you hear a kittens heartbeat inside the mother's stomach?

My daughter's cat had kittens a few months ago and she got really skinny as the kittens got older. but now she's starting to gain weight. My daughter listened to the cat's stomach and she thought that she could hear a faint heartbeat so i'm asking how early can you hear a kitten's heartbeat inside the mother.

Recommended Answer:

You cannot hear kitten's heartbeats without a scope (the vet may). If your cat had kittens a few months ago - she should be spayed immediately. Her body is in NO shape to have another litter if she is pregnant and those kittens are likely to die and mom have no milk.Get her to the vet this week for an emergency spay.

  • Well, let's just hope your cat isn't pregnant again! The heart in the embryo of a cat starts to beat at about 23-25 days after conception; but you would need a stethoscope to hear it. Your daughter most likely heard the mother cat's own heart beat or bowel sounds; she sure couldn't hear an embryo's heart beat by lying her head against the cat's stomach. As far as that goes, I doubt you would ever be able to hear an unborn kitten's heart beat, no matter what the stage of development, without a stethoscope.
