I am pretty sure I have an eating disorder but I don't want to tell my parents?

I weigh 105 now and I use to weigh 115 in the last week. I've been exercising and throwing up my food when I eat. Girls who were skinny then me would always call me fat and make fun of me so I decided I needed to lose weight fast and I've been doing it for about 2 weeks. I've been getting headache after but I can't seem to stop. I need to know if there's anything I can do on my own, I'm 16.

How to Lose Weight Quickly for Women Over 40

I have specialized in eating disorders in graduate school, and have some experience in treating them. You do not have a diagnosable eating disorder...yet. But you do have disordered eating and what you are doing is extremely dangerous. So dangerous, that death could occur at any second. You don't have to be 60lbs to die from disordered eating...if you are throwing up all you eat with electrolight imbalances, that could cause a heart attack. The fact that you have dropped 10 pounds in one week proves you are already dehydrated, as it is impossible to lose that much weight in the time frame you are saying. Which means that you have lost a lot of water weight in your body (ie, you are dehydrated). I would tell your parents that you are heading down a rough path...ask them for counseling. There is a reason you have gone to such extremes, as you were not heavy at all to begin with. Figure out why this obsession has all of a sudden become so important to you before it does become more of an issue. Trust me. Not only am I a professional in the mental health field, but I suffered from an eating disorder for 17 years before I was able to get into recovery. I have "died" twice and am lucky to be alive. Stop your behaviors now, before it is too late.

Other Answers:

  • It's not an eating disorder yet, but you're close to it. I would never tell my parents anything, and I don't really know how you could tell them
  • Need not tell your parents. Consult a dietitian.
  • I'm like you and had to gain weight but healthy weight. Eat full portions and meat and dairy should be exceeded more. There's always weight maintain or gain shakes. Also you can mention it to a physician. My sister is a physician. Go to a local store and purchase vitamins and shakes. ITS A START! Best wishes (:
