Is it okay to eat under your BMR?

I''m 5''6 and 130 lbs and trying to lose weight. My BMR (amount of calories I would burn in a day if I didn''t eat anything) is around 1400. But I''ve only been eating around 1100 calories a day. I''ve been hearing that this is bad for you?? By the way, I don''t eat wheat, gluten, or dairy products because of intolerance issues. So should I be eating more? Can you give me more information on BMR? Thanks!

Your BMR basically means how many calories you use to stay alive during the whole day (and night!).
If your actual calorie intake is lower than your BMR, you should start to lose weight at some point. This may not be good in your case as you''re a pretty good weight for your height.
However, if you have no muscle and all your weight is from weight then please build a bit of muscle! :)

Another note for BMR
It''s important WHERE your calories come from. In general, a good macro ratio is 20% protein/60% carbs/25% fat. In your case (1400 calories), lets see where your calories SHOULD be coming from (although you are undereating).

280 from protein (70g daily)
840 from carbs (210g daily)
280 from fat (31g daily)

Here''s how to work it out:
1400*0.20=280
1400*0.60=840
1400*0.20=280

Protein and carbs are worth 4 calories per gram. So 70g of protein (70x4) is 280. Fat is 9 calories per gram (31x9=280).

Following this diet, along with 30 minutes of cardio every day (increasing heart rate to 70-85% of maximum heart rate, i.e. jogging, swimming, stair walking) you will definitely start to lose weight at a healthy weight.

I hope this helps!

  • If i were you i would add about 250 more calories a day... BMR is based on an average. Just eat an extra salad with spinach and have a grapefruit or something...your weight is right where it should be anyway.
  • if your not hungry then your not hungry
but if your active.. u would probably need more fuel then that
