Question about VO2 max and losing weight?

I would like to get my VO2 up because it is only at 29 (I know that is low). So I planned on starting to run on the treadmill but I found out I don't lose as many calories when I run instead of briskly walk (We use polar watches that tell you your heart rate/calories burned since you put in personal data). It is normal to not burn as many running as walking, right? But I also want to lose weight and I am no good at this. I'm 19, a female, and I have asthma. For a class we have to do 4 workouts a week. How can I get my VO2 up AND burn lots of calories? I also don't really have friends to play sports or do workout videos with or anything.
I like situps but can't stand pushups. I hurt myself in highschool when I was forced to do them. How would they make you lose that many calories though?
I'm also not going to buy a book/program off the computer...

Ah, this is way easier than you think....

High intensity interval training (HIIT).

Do one minute or 30 second sprints at 80% of Training heart rate (high cardio level or low peak on a tread mill...around 7 MPH). Drop the speed down to 3.5 MPH for 30 secs to 1 minute to let your heart rate drop. (If you have to, go to 2 MPH to get heart rate down to 50-60%). Then back up to 70-80% for another interval. Try doing that for 15 minutes to start; as you improve, you can get up to 30 minutes.

If you don't have a treadmill you can use, you can do the same on a track. Shoot for 1.5 miles total, which is 6 laps on a 1/4 mile track. Sprint the length, jog the curve, sprint the length, jog the curve...etc. Walk if you have to, but only one curve.

I've done this for 2 times a week for 4 weeks and have increased my VO2 max twice and increased my speed from 6 MPH to 7, and increased my intervals from 30 secs to 1 minutes. (Dropped 12 pounds in the 3 weeks, but that's not the point) And I'm an old chick. here's an article on it. http://www.shape.com/fitness/workouts/8-benefits-high-intensity-interval-training-hiit

  • I don't know what VO2 is, but I have a couple tips on losing weight.

    • If you have a smartphone, try setting an alarm on it to do 20 push-ups hour. If you do this often, before you know it, you'll be healthy and fit!

    • If you don't own a smartphone, try to remember.

    • If you have an Xbox with kinect, try to buy an exercise game.

    • During commercials when watching TV do 7 push-ups every other commercial. Increase the number if you think you are able to.

    • If you actually want to get abs, do sit-ups. It's a great workout to get abs.

    • Laughing. Laughing is a great way to burn off those calories with simply flexing your stomach. (Flexing your stomach happens when you're laughing)

    • Swimming. It's another great way to burn those calories. You can also tread water whe in the water.

You'll do great! I know you can!
