Should I buy an elliptical or join a gym?

Should I buy an elliptical or join a gym?My family is thinking about purchasing an elliptical. I'm also thinking of joining a gym. Which should I do? Will I lose weight just working out on an elliptical, or would I need to do other exercises? And if so, what exercises would I have to do? And if i can lose weight with an elliptical, like 1 pound per week, how long will I have to exercise and how many days? Thank you so much!

I like the answer above me but he over-simplifies. Gym prices are all over the board. $8 month to $100 a month. Check out the gyms near your house and the ones on the way home from work. Some give out trial memberships. Some have trainers who will work with you. Classes, pools, etc. do you like going to the gym. some people just like getting out of the house and meeting people. some people find gyms intimidating. If you worked out on the elliptical every other day for about 30 minutes and cut 300 calories a day, you could safely loss 4 - 8 pounds a month. You could add something like the Mens health 15 minute workout and you would be golden.

Diet is 90% of it and working out is about 10%. Eat how you would normally for a week, but track absolutely everything you put in your mouth. From there, you can establish your eating habits. Depending on your age, weight, height, and gender, you can calculate how many calories you should be consuming each day (there are tons of websites that can calculate this for you, just google it). Then cut 500 calories off that amount. Each pound of fat is about 3500 calories, so 500 calories less a day equals a pound of fat a week. Cut out as much bad food as your possibly can. Concentrate on protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats (such as omega-3's). Treat yourself every once in awhile also. Example: Every pound or two you lose, you can have a cheat snack/meal. Okay so since march of last year I''ve been trying to lose weight, I started out as 5''4 and 141 lbs.

-So from march to June I ate 1340 calories a day and lost 5lbs

-from June to mid July I ate 900 calories a day and lost 5 more lbs

- the i started eating 1200 calories a day and gained about 3lbs back.

-in November I started doing swim team and I was still eating 1200 calories a day plus some extra cause I was like starved. And from then till now I probably gained 6lbs. (From muscle??)

So my question is how can I get to being 130 again without losing my muscle and feeling skinny? I feel so fat with it :( also how many calories should I be eating? Is my body too used to 1200-1300 calories? I feel like I hit a plateau... Also I did go down a inch or two from swimming, but I also feel like I gained a little since summer
