If you really need to gain weight, is it ok to binge now and then?

I am really underweight and need to gain about 10 pounds. If I have one or two (at most) binge days a week it it going to help me or will I gain lots of weight in only one place?

How to Lose Weight Without Counting Calories

Recommended Answer:

To gain weight you need to combine protein foods with starchy carbohydrates as indicated below. Good weight gaining combinations are bread, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweet potatoes combined with meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts or sea food. Peanut butter sandwiches and cheese sandwiches are good weight gaining combinations. The protein in the above combinations will help to gain extra muscles.

The right cardio exercise and weight training activities (like squatsand deadlifts) can make a difference in your backside and help you getthose buns of steel. Find out the best cardio and strength trainingexercises for strengthening and firming up your rear.1. Squats.Squats are one of the best exercises you can do for your hips, buttand thighs. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping backstraight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Let your butt lightlytouch chair and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12reps and add weights for more intensity.2. Lunges. Stand in a splitstance, with feet about 3 feet apart. You want both knees to be atabout 90-degree angles at the bottom of the movement, so adjustaccordingly. Hold weights in each hand (or place a barbell behind theneck) for added intensity. Bend the knees and lower the back kneetoward the floor, keeping the front heel down and the knee directlyover the centre of the foot. Keep the torso straight and abs in as youpush through the front heel and back to starting position. Don't lockthe knees at the top of the movement. Perform 1 to 3 sets of 10 to 16reps according to your fitness level and goals.3. Step Ups. For stepups, you simply place one foot on a step or platform and push throughthe heel onto the step. This is an excellent exercise for the glutes.4. Hip Extensions. Lie on the floor with feet propped on the ball, legs straight. Keeping abs tight, slowly lift your hips off the floor(squeezing the buttocks) until body is in a straight line. Hold for afew seconds and lower, repeating 10 to 15 times.5. One-Legged Deadlifts. You should skip this exercise if youhave any back problems. To do this move, take the left leg back just a bit, lightlyresting on the toe. With the weights in front of the thighs, tip fromthe hips and lower the weights as low as your flexibility allows. Keepyour back flat or with a natural arch and make sure you keep the abscontracted to protect the back. Squeeze the glutes of the working legto raise back up. Do 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps.6. Hiking. Now theexercises listed above aren't the only strength moves for the glutes, but we often forget that there are cardio activities that will alsoengage the backside. Hiking is one of those activities and it alsoburns tons of calories. Also, walking up an incline automatically getsyour glutes more involved and, if you're wearing a backpack, you'rereally getting a workout. A 140-lb person burns about 390 calories inabout an hour!7. Biking. Riding a bike is great for your heart and italso targets almost every muscle in your hips, thighs and butt. On astationary bike, alternate 3 minutes at 70-80 RPM with 2 minutes at100-110 RPM for a calorie-blasting 30 minute workout. You can also trySpinning at the gym or riding outside. Gear up to really work yourglutes! A 140-lb person burns 335 calories in 45 minutes.8. Running. Running, like walking, is accessible, easy to learn, reduces stress, helps in weight loss, and it makes you feel good. Plus, it reallyworks your butt, especially when you add a few hills to your regularrunning route. A 140-lb person burns 475 calories during a 45 minutejog.9. Kickboxing. Kickboxing was a hot item back in the day, but it'sstill a great workout. Controlled kicks work your hips, thighs andbutt while complex combinations that include punches will target yourabs to make them stronger. A 140-lb woman will burn up to 500 calorieswith 45 minutes of kickboxing.10. Walking. Walking is easy: you can doit anywhere, anytime with no special equipment. There's no learningcurve and it's something you can incorporate all day long. If you walkup hills, you can really target your glutes and, if you pick up theintensity, you'll burn some of that extra flab off your buns! A lot of diets make people gain weight, like for you. So maybe instead, just base your foods on natural and non-processed foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, and nuts.(without added ingredients) Also meats and whole grain labeled foods. (It''s okay to treat your self once in awhile) Try to avoid fast food too. For exercise, do cardio for 30 min. to an hour. Running really helps. You can also incorperate strength exercise too. You should exercise 5-6 times a week. For exercising with me, I like to push my self farther everytime so you can start with something you find not too difficult and build yourself higher and higher. My dad works out a lot and I know he gets a good workout because usually his whole shirt is drenched in sweat and he works to the point he feels like he can do no more. You don''t have to work as hard as him for a good workout, but you should try to get close. Just remember that if you are exercising, but still not eating correctly, you won''t see much progress so a good diet is always a key! Good luck!

Does Curves Complete work for a smaller, slightly overweight woman? (10 lbs over)?

I'm wondering, because I'm noticing my larger female counterparts are losing weight quicker. I'm 140 pounds, and need to lose about 10 of that. Here's what I'm thinking:

Larger women were probably eating 3000+ calories a day, due to their food habits. Now that they are put on the 1400 calorie diet, and working out, they are reducing calorie intake, and burning the rest by working out, therefore, results. Because I am 140 pounds anyway, and put on this "diet" that is really my NORMAL intake (140X10 cals a pound=1400), and I am only burning 400 calories a day, THAT is why I'm not even losing a pound week, like the plan claims. 400X7 days a week=2800 calories burned, and there are 3500 cals in a pound. therefore, ALMOST a pound burned. I'm really burning about .75 pounds, as opposed the the 1.0 I'm supposed to.

Any one else see this flaw? I get weighed once a week, and get let down everytime because not even a pound has been burned. I think I need to be on a 1200 cal diet.

BTW, I work out 5 times a week and do an ADDITIONAL 4 Zumba classes....

Thoughts? I'd love your feedback.

Fastest Way to Lose Weight

Are you following the Curves Complete plan or watching others who are following it? I'm a little uncertain due to the wording of your title. If you aren't following it and asking if it would work for you, then the answer is YES! If you are following it and you're asking for advice on how to get better results, here are some things to think about:

The meal plan needs to be followed closely. It's not only about how much you eat (straight calories in) vs WHAT you eat and when! It's important to eat the snacks to keep your metabolism going throughout the day. It's important to make sure you choose good substitutions if things aren't specifically listed in your plan. You want a good balance of carbs, fats, protein, etc. As a general guideline no female is recommended to go below 1200 calories a day.

Your workouts need to be evaluated. Are you really pushing yourself every time? I'm not sure if they have Curves Smart at your particular club but that is a good way to measure your workout intensity! Use your tag if they do! Otherwise is your heart rate up like it should be every time you reach the stepper machine? Are you breaking a sweat? If not you know you need to push harder. If you ARE working out very hard, it's possible you could be training a little aggressively and might need to eat a little MORE! Our bodies are funny about this (especially when we're trying to trim the last few pounds!) and will go into defense mode to store the fat that we have if we aren't fueling them enough. Workouts should not only be about burning calories to create a deficit but also for maintaining and increasing muscles. If you are a heavy trainer you actually need to eat BACK some of the calories you burn! You might want to pick a few days a week and actually add in a small meal (maybe 300 cals - make sure it's something healthy) and see if that will rev up your metabolism some.

You say that you haven't been seeing results on the scale, but have they been measuring you? Are your inches changing at all? Check the inches and body fat %. Sometimes we get an unrealistic goal of a "weight" we want when really we should focus on the size and shape of our body!

As far as weight loss goes, we tell people you can lose 1-2 pounds a week because that's the most you should aim to lose to get pure fat loss. Especially as a slightly overweight person - larger people can get bigger numbers at first because of exactly the things you said! Generally speaking, an aggressive approach is to lose 1% of your overall body weight per week. Your max per week should be around 1.4 pounds so if you were to lose .75 in a week that would actually be pretty reasonable.

Sorry if this is a little long or random, there are so many factors to this and I'm trying to touch a little on everything. If you ARE following the Curves Complete plan this is something you should discuss with your coach! She should be able to help you get through this plateau. If you aren't on the program then it might be just what you need.

Ways to stop myself from eating too much?

I'm a 15 year old girl, 5ft 1 and I weigh about 8 stone. I go to the gym twice a week and I also do a lot of dancing. I would love to have a more toned body, but I think what's letting me down is my diet. I don't smoke and I don't drink alcohol often either. I don't eat breakfast, and for lunch breaks ill usually eat pasta. When I'm at home, ill either snack all night, or eat pizza/chips/more pasta/or take aways.

Luckily for me I shed weight fairly easily. But that's not the point, I'd really like some tips to prevent my cravings over snacking and binge eating. Also I'd really appreciate some healthy diet plan of some kind, thanks!

Choose The Best Way To Lose Weight

Recommanded Answer:
Losing weight is about 80% what you eat, so look at what you're eating. Change your lifestyle, don't go on a diet. Eat less junk/fast/fried foods, cut back on soda pop and focus on eating a variety of foods including fruits and vegetables, but also lean proteins (chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, plain greek yogurt), healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, hummus), brown rice, oatmeal, milk, low fat cheese, whole wheat bread, etc. The less junk food you eat, the less you're going to want. Try eating just one 'bad' food each day, then go for once every other day and then just 2-3 times a week.

You also should really start eating something for breakfast. This gets your metabolism going in the morning. Try some plain greek yogurt with fresh berries (NOT the fruit on the bottom kinds - that stuff has as much sugar as a candy bar), or a couple scrambled eggs with low fat cheese and whole wheat toast. Something with some carbs/fat/protein to get your day started off right.

If you feel hungry, ask yourself, "Do I want some vegetables or just junk food?" If the answer is junk food, then you're not really hungry. Drink a big glass of water and wait 20 minutes. If you still feel hungry, but not for vegetables, then go do something else to keep yourself busy like text a friend or get out of the house and go for a walk. Also, you could go with your parents next time they go to the grocery store and remind them to skip the junk food and get more of the things I mentioned above. Good luck!

How are anorexics so skinny if there's such a thing called "starvation mode"?

I'm confused because a lot of people on here have told me if I eat too little I won't lose weight and I will actually gain weight because my body will hold on to fat and what not. But then how are anorexics so skinny? And it's also said you would gain the weight back really fast. But I remember awhile ago I was only eating 1 meal a day, not because I was anorexic, I didn't even realize I was eating so little and I lost a lot of weight, I was bony as heck and I stayed thy way for two years until I started over eating which will make sense to gain weight. So then how is starvation mode true?

Lose Weight, No Sweat!

Recommanded Answer:
OK, First, if you eat NOTHING you will certainly lose weight -- that's required by the laws of physics. Maybe not even for a few days, owing to fluctuations in water-weight, but soon you'll start losing weight. Your metabolism will slow down by pulling any lever it can pull to reduce calorie expenditure, but if you eat nothing, it's certain that your body mass will decrease over time.

The loose unscientific term "starvation mode" refers to the fact that your metabolism will try to slow down, and you'll burn fewer calories as a base metabolism. But your metabolism can't shut down to zero calories expended, not until you drop dead.

The health problem is that someone fasting not only burns fat, but you are also cannibalizing your inner protein ... from muscles and organs. This is necessary because your body needs to maintain a minimum level of blood sugar (glucose) for energy-burning. Some parts of the body can live happily by burning only fat, but some parts of the body, including parts of the brain, cannot burn fat and MUST burn blood sugar for energy. If not eating where does blood sugar come from? From protein -- you can easily convert protein to blood sugar. Either dietary protein, or if not eating, it's protein stored in your muscles and organs.

So a starving person is LITERALLY eating himself from the inside out. And loses weight, technically, because fat and blood sugar are metabolized to release energy, and the by-products of that reaction are carbon dioxide and water, and you get rid of those by-products by exhaling, pissing, and sweating. (That's how a person literally loses weight ... exhaling, pissing, sweating, and defecating.)

At some point the starving person damages organs by extracting their protein, and at some point, the damage causes something to fail (probably the heart), and they die. So a person literally starves to death because of organ damage, in the effort to produce blood sugar from their own tissues.

Back to your question. What commenters usually mean about starvation mode is that part about your metabolism slowing down. If you fast totally, yes you'll lose weight. But if you only reduce your calorie intake but still eat, it's possible you won't lose weight because your metabolism will shut down expenditure to below your intake. It's even possible your body will raid your protein stores faster than it does your body fat, and so you have an increase in bodyfat percentage -- even as you lose weight! So you become "fatter" but lighter. It's possible.

Then, with your metabolism all screwed up, when you inevitably eat more normally again, you might gain weight.

These effects are highly variable per individual, aside from the unavoidable fact that ANYONE totally fasting will lose body mass. So one's personal experience doesn't prove anything for the human race in general. It's probably true that severe calorie restriction will screw up your metabolism but individuals are all different, so any random thing could happen to any one person.

  • If you don't eat, or eat too little you wont gain weight. You will just appear bloated for some time. If youve seen documentaries of groups of people in other countries that live very poorly & don't have much to eat, you'll notice that the small children are "fat". But really they're just bloated & that will go down once the body has finished eating away all their body fat.
  • they're liars. i fasted for a while and lost 10 pounds and i started eating normally instead and only gained like 1 pound back. also, wtahc some doccumentaries on anorexia and you can see how long it took them to recover. Yes, its true that your body holds onto fat, but if you dont eat fattening foods(or any food for that matter) it wont HAVE anything to hold onto, therefore youll lose weight...

How many carbs to lose weight?

i've been working out for 2 months and barely lost a pound. i now realise i was around 200-250 carbs a day, which is crazy!
how many carbs should i eat per day to lose weight? most websites say 50-100, but i can't go loswer than 110? :( is that okay?

Recommanded Answer:
Do will have to self experiment and find out what works for you. If its hard to go under 110 that's fine. Try 110 and see if that works for you.
Its also important to eat healthy carbs and avoid unhealthy carbs. Eat carbs in the form of fruits, tubers and veggies. Avoid sugar, grains and processed foods.
Calories also matter. You cant eat 3000+ calories a day and lose weight. Eat when your hungry and stop when your full. Listening to your body works pretty well when you do lower carb higher fat. Fat keeps you full and carbs make a lot of people hungry.

  • You seem misinformed. Carbs don't make you fat. You gain fat when you're consuming more calories than you're burning. To lose fat you simply need to be at a calorie deficit. The reason why some people lose weight whilst eating low carbs is because they're removing calories from their diet.
