If you want to put on weight, you should work out, to insure that youput on muscle and not fat. Healthy weight gain, just like healthyweight loss, takes time and requires a conscious effort to apply goodhabits.Recommended Ways to Gain WeightHave meals with the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and theright kinds of fat (such as unsaturated and monounsaturated fats, olive oil, canola oil, pistachios, almonds and walnuts). Heinemannsuggests the following ratio: 60%-70% carbohydrates, 10%-15% protein, and a small amount of fat.Eat foods higher in calories, vitamins, and minerals, as opposedto higher in fat or sugar. Pack more nutritious calories in eachserving. For example, you may add grated cooked eggs to mashedpotatoes, ground chicken to soups and gravies, cheese in casseroles, eggs, and soups, and nonfat dried milk in soups, shakes, milk, andmashed potatoes. If you get too full too fast, try having more high-calorie foods orslices of foods as opposed to consuming the whole thing (raisinsversus grapes, granola and Grape Nuts versus corn flakes, mango slicesversus the whole mango).Limit drinking beverages to a half-hour before and after a meal.Drink mixed juices (apple/berry, peach/orange/banana as opposed to onejuice beverages) for a higher calorie intake. With moderation, you mayadd in good fat sources to meals such as nuts, avocado, olives, andfatty fish (salmon and mackerel).Snack in between meals. Nuts, dried fruits, and yogurtare good options, but it's also important to find nutritious foodsthat you will enjoy. Have a nutritious snack before bedtime, such as apeanut butter sandwich.

  • 1.Eat and eat often. While everyone should abide by this rule, it is especially true for those who are trying to gain weight. Eating often means eating five to six small meals a day and packing in those nutrients.2.Eat the right kind of fats. You want a bigger, healthier looking body--not a thin frame with a bit of a paunch. Maximise the avocados, dairy products, nuts (including peanut butter), and meats; stay away from ice cream, fries and fatty junk foods.3.Go high-protein. Though it's a myth that protein builds muscle, it is an essential part of your diet.[2] It's a building block of our entire body: muscles, bones, skin, hair, and blood. Go for high-protein foods to fill up.4.Layer on the carbs. Though they get a bad rap, carbs, too, help build muscle and facilitate all of your vital functions. Carbs are your body's main source of energy. Complex carbs are fine; it's the simple ones you want to avoid. They contain empty calories and will most likely be stored as fat because the sugars enter your bloodstream quickly and cause a spike in blood sugar levels.5.Eat late at night. Without even upping your food intake, changing your eating times can facilitate the weight gaining process. Have a big dinner late at night and after that? Pile on dessert
  • To gain weight you need to combine protein foods with starchy carbohydrates as indicated below. Good weight gaining combinations are bread, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweet potatoes combined with meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts or sea food. Peanut butter sandwiches and cheese sandwiches are good weight gaining combinations. The protein in the above combinations will help to gain extra muscles.

How can I gain upper body strength and size?

I lift weights with my football team thrice a week. I do push ups daily. But I am still weaker than the average athlete my age and height. Just A freshman and concerned because I gain leg, core and glute muscle quickly and easily. My arms, shoulders and chest are tuned, but not proportianal to my lower body. Ive been working on it obviously but its not working. Im just not quite as big up top as most of my teammates and I need more strength. Any tips besides pounding muscle milk and protien, because thats not happening.

  • Your muscle is like meat, you want to strengthen it you gotta tenderize it.So do an activity that requires you getting blows to arms, shoulder, and chest. You muscles will bruise and hurt for awhile, but as you muscle heals it will strengthen it by giving it resistance.Your muscles will grow and stretch due to the activity you do.But if you want them to stretch giving more space for muscle to grow also can do things like yoga or stretching exercises or rubbing and squeezing muscles too.

Is it ok to drink milk only all day?

So I've been trying to gain weight lately because I'm underweight. So I've decided to drink about a gallon of milk each day. This technique is known as "GOMAD" where you drink a gallon of milk a day. I was wondering since I drink that much milk a day, do I need to drink any water? Also my pee been pretty clear for the past couple of days. I haven't been drinking much water or maybe no water at all, just milk. Are there any health risk of doing this? What are the pro's and con's?

How to Lose Weight After 50

Recommended Answer:

Bad idea. Unless you're drinking skim milk, that much in a day includes a whole lot of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol. But even if you are drinking skim, that's way too much calcium. Just one serving of dairy (aka one cup of milk) accounts for 1/3 of the daily recommended calcium for the average adult. Now, this is based on a 2,000 calorie diet, of course, but even if you are on a much higher calorie diet drinking nothing but milk all day is going to result in hypercalcemia, which you don't want. Milk is great. It's an awesome source of protein, carbs, calcium and essential vitamins (particularly vitamin D which is tricky to get from food). I use skim milk in all my shakes. But anything in excess can be unhealthy, and milk is no exception. Stop looking for a one-stop shopping solution. The key is to eat a balanced diet that will give you an appropriate number of calories to meet your energy needs without leaving a large excess supply. There's nothing balanced about a diet that includes drinking milk like it's water.

Other Answers:

  • Too much calcium
  • Its not good because then you bones can form calcium stones which are really painful and hard to take. Your body needs certain amounts of calcium each day, and you may be exceeding. Th RDA tells you how much calcium and other minerals you have to consume each day. Hope it works ;). You can use applications such as MyFitnessPal for iPhone etc. Tis helps yu control your weight.
  • Bad idea.
  • First...Milk is an amazing thing. Studies have shown that human breast milk is the only substance that you would be perfectly fine to dink only it for the rest of your life. I know we are talking about cow milk but the two are very similar. Milk is all babies drink and it keeps they growing nice and strong. Second...If your pee is clear then that's a great sign. pea is meant to flush out all the bad stuff in your body and when it is clear that means that you have plenty of fluids to wash out your system. Third...If you are going to do GOMAD make sure you stay active! If you gain 25 pounds of fat then that is really bad! Milk is high in protein so it helps with muscle gain but only if you actually use your muscles.

Can you put weight loss powders in juice?

  • Juice, fruit smoothie, cocoa...I dont' see how it would matter. If you need a weight loss diet, Here's a good low-carb food/exercise plan:Breakfast: Cook 9-grain cereal (from health food store) in water with rolled oats and wheat bran. Make a pot of it on weekends and nuke 1/2 cup each morning. Then stir in low fat milk or yogurt, banana, walnuts and berries. Drink hot Ovaltine. Breakfast should be your largest meal of the day to raise blood sugar level which falls during the night.Lunch: Egg, tuna or turkey ½ sandwich on multi-grain (not just whole wheat) bread with bean or alfalfa sprouts, yogurt, fresh fruit. If you had meat loaf for dinner, bring a meat loaf sandwich on whole grain bread (NO mayo). On cold days, a squatty thermos of hot chili, split peas with ham, or beef stew.Snacks: Fresh (not canned) fruit. Nothing ever from a vending machine. Dinner: salad with white meat chicken and fresh (not canned) veggies: tomatoes, 2 kinds of lettuce, 2 kinds of shredded cabbage, shredded or sliced carrots, alfalfa or bean sprouts, zucchini, green or red peppers, hard boiled eggs, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, tofu, cottage cheese, spinach-...Instead of dressing, squeeze 1/4 tomato over it. Or homemade bean/vegetable soups; great way to recycle leftovers.Or grilled fish with steamed veggies.Or omelet: In blender, whip together eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, onions, garlic powder. Cook with mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and green or red peppers. Avoid junk food, fast foods, pastries, desserts, anything with sugar (cancer cells feed on sugar), gluten, syrup (even canned fruit in syrup), peanut butter, fat/grease (pork, wieners, chops, bacon, salami, pizza, chips, fries), pasta, potatoes, ramen, popcorn, white bread, rice, canned veggies, ice cream, soda, chips, tobacco, alcohol and coffee. No oil except olive and mac nut. To keep your skin clear, drink water, tea, unsweetened veggie and fruit juice. Join a gym; they have all the equipment and staff to show you how to use it to get the look you want to achieve, but you have to ask them. Much cheaper than buying your own equipment. Go hiking, biking, jogging, bowling, swimming, rowing, jump rope, play tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer, jumping jacks, lift weights, trampoline? To tone your tummy, do sit ups, push ups, pull ups, leg lifts, butt raises and crunches. For more energy, take Super B complex. Try appetite suppressants.
  • I'm done with my weight loss journey and completely happy with how I feel and how I look right now however losing weight is a challenge for anyone and even losing 5 pounds and keeping it off isn't an easy task. Also I bet you didn't know that 5 pounds of fat is about the size of 8 cheese burgers? That alone should be enough to make anyone want to get on the ball and start a change for the better. Weight loss can be really easy to learn but the problem is nobody wants to put the required effort that is needed to actually do it, instead people continually look for (easy) ways to do it. If there was an easy way to lose weight I don't think 35% of Americans would be obese. There was a time when I also wanted to lose weight and was tired of starting diets only to lose motivation and give up just a few weeks later after seeing no results. However, let me tell you it is literally one of the easiest things you will ever learn once you find a good and reputable place to learn it from and I say that only because the world is filled with magic diet pills, liquid flush diets and a thousand other quick fixes that promise xx pounds of weight loss in the first week and even though it is impossible they know you're going to do it because your desperate. I have probably tried every diet pill, liquid flush diet, and ab rocket machine known to man and have had no success with any of them nor do I know anyone that has ever had any success with them. I have also tried starving myself which works very well for the first few weeks' right before your metabolism comes to a complete stop and eating just the tiny bit makes you gain weight and you end up weighing more than you did before you started starving yourself. Companies promote weight loss to make money not to get people healthy again and that's because they know you're not going to be a customer and buy their products if you're no longer fat. http://fatloossfactor.com is a site I want you to go to when you have 10 or 20 minutes to spare and I want you to sit down and watch his video on weight loss. He helps people every day to lose weight I have never seen someone as committed as him and that will go so far out of his way to help someone. His weight loss program is one of the best I have ever had the enjoyment of doing and it is without doubt the best success I have ever had with any weight loss program. I also couldn't be happier with my body right now and I have never felt this wonderful in my whole life. In the end you just got to remember to stick with it and stay confident in yourself and in no time you can achieve the results you have always wanted. It's not hard to lose weight but most people have a hard time staying motivated and 9 times out of 10 it was because they weren't really committed from the beginning. Anyways I hope I helped you and I hope you make the commitment to change your body and life. Remember it's not easy to take the first step but you did, you're here right now taking it and the rest of the steps will fall into place. Have a wonderful day.

Lose Weight, No Sweat!

Recommended Answer:
Okay, first of all it's important to weigh yourself at the same time in the day. First thing in the morning after your morning ablutions is best.

Second, your scales need to be on a solid surface, not carpet. Scales on carpet can give false readings.

Third, it's the weight loss over a week which matters, not day-to-day.

Some food can take as long as 2 days to pass through the body. Also muscle weight is more than fat weight, so if you are pumping the muscles you might not appear to lose weight every day.

For a man, you usually need about 2400 calories a day to stay the same weight. For a woman it's about 2000 calories. Subtract about 400 calories for a complete couch potato! To lose weight, drop to between 1/2 and 3/4 of your required intake. So for a man, between 1200 and 1800 calories a day. For a woman it should be between 1000 and 1500 a day.

Don't drop below that. If you do your body will drop its metabolic rate and you won't lose weight.

Personally I find it's more effective to follow the fast diet. In that, either 2 or 3 days a week you have "fasting" days where you eat only 1/4 of your daily requirement (so 600 calories for men and 500 for women). The rest of the time you eat normally - and it's really important to eat the full amount on non-fasting days to fool the body into keeping a high metabolic rate.

On the normal eating days that's a good time to do the extra exercise. On a fasting day, just have a bit of fruit for breakfast, some packet soup for lunch (soup is a good appetite suppressant and a packet soup is less than 100 calories). That leaves enough calories for a few hundred calorie evening snack.

Fasting days should not be consecutive, and they are easier to do than you might think because you always know that the next day you can eat normally! The great thing is that when you reach target weight you can drop back to just 1 fast day a week to keep it ticking over. There's no nasty diet food involved and you don't have to eat like a rabbit all the time.

  • OMG! you don't seem to under stand the basics of your body. Weight fluctuated between one and 5 pounds daily depending on how much water you have had and when your last took a poop.
  • DON'T weigh yourself everyday

    Every two weeks is best

1 month of diet and exercise no weight loss?

For the last month I have been working out 5-6 days a week. This is my workout schedule I do all classes at the gym
Monday Muscle Fit- A muscle toning class with weights
Tuesday Tae Bo
Wednesday – Bodiography (stretching, resistance band and stability exercises)
Thursday – 30 mins of high intensity cardio and 30 mins of weight training
Friday – Tabata
Saturday Zumba
Sunday rest

All of the classes are 1 hour long. On top of that I have been dieting. A normal day will consist of cereal for breakfast without milk, fruit for a snack, salad with chicken for lunch, granola bar mid afternoon, lean protein and veggies with a small starch for dinner and something small as a desert. The only things I drink are a ton of water, about 3 cups of black coffee a day and each morning I have 1 bottle of dragon fruit juice which is 70 calories. I have cheated here and there going out to dinner once in a while, having a muffin for breakfast on the weekend but nothing too extreme. Monday – Friday I am strict with the diet. I haven’t lost any weight so far and starting to lose motivation. What should I change? I am 5’2 and 30lbs overweigh so I definitely have weight to lose

Recommended Answer:
Just a guess, but cheating "here and there" is probably where the problem is. For one person, it's "nothing too extreme," but to another, it is. For example, muffins (think of the phrase muffin top) are best used for putting on weight, not taking it off. When you are not eating muffins then it's cereal? How much sugar is in that cereal? Sugar is not your friend. Get rid of it. It is hiding in almost everything you eat. For that matter, how often is going out to dinner once in a while? And what are you eating?

  • Do you track and measure everything you eat? Are you eating enough calories for your height, weight and activity level?
  • no wonder you're consuming processed foods.

    which are inflammatory.

Losing weight mentality?

Okay, so I have been trying to lose weight. Last year I lost from 10-15 pounds because I went really extreme with it, but once summer came and the new school year started I gained it all back. I am eighteen and a senior in high school. I am trying to lose weight, but in a smarter way this time. Little by little so the habits actually stick. For me, I have learned it is better to do it at my own pace than in an extreme way because then I go to the opposite extreme- eating horribly! Sooo, I have been doing good this last month. My question is, however, is it a good idea to keep yourself busy when trying to lose weight? Because I was thinking... And you know the whole "When you stop wanting something, you get it." belief? So, if I ate healthy and worked out, but also had other priorities, would it be better on me and my mind? Like keeping myself busy with other things so that I don't make this my only priority. Also, what are some things that have helped you get to your goal weight/body?

Lose Weight As You Get Older - Ezine Articles

Recommanded Answer:
Yes! That's an excellent thing to do! Don't make eating right and workout out the only things that run through your mind, or you'll go absolutely nuts! I used to be so obsessed with what I was eating and how much I exercised, and I noticed I was always cranky and irritable. The best way to lose weight is slowly and consistently, that way, when you get to your ideal body that you want, you'll appreciate it more because you worked so hard and long to get where you are, so you'll be less likely to blow it. Don't be too caught up in your diet and exercise routine. If you're out with friends and you really want a piece of pizza, have it! Just eat it in moderation. Or, if you miss and exercise day, that's fine. You're not going to gain every pound you've lost by not workout out for one day. I think that's a great idea, so do it! That way, losing weight will be easier and you'll sort of do it without knowing :)

  • A diet should never consume your life. I struggled with losing weight during high school and I would obsess over it. You have to take this a day at a time and just try to make better and healthier choices. You really can eat what you want if you just control the portions. Don't be too hard on yourself!! You can achieve this if you really want it but you have to change your lifestyle not just cut out everything bad for you, it's a process to lose weight and from personal experience the slower you lose the weight the better chance it will stay off!! You got this!
  • I'm glad you're asking about 'mentality' and not just 'what should I eat?' You realize that losing weight depends more on 'mindset' than some prescribed list of foods and quantities, which is good.

Well first of all you have to see 'diet' not as a temporary regimen to reach a target weight and then to be abandoned. That's how we tend to see it here in the US, and it's partly why most people fail. As soon as you go off your diet you gain the weight back, and it would be healthier to just carry around a few extra pounds than to go up and down over and over.

So you want to see diet as making new habits, lifelong habits, a permanent change in your life. So you want to make changes slowly, only as you are comfortable with them. Fad diets where you eat nothing but sauerkraut and celery for three weeks do more damage than good. But drifting towards lower-carb foods, smaller portions of sweets and carbs, being more careful with snacks, etc. is a good way to go for the long run.

Secondly, diet and exercise are like two sides of the same coin. They work together much better than either one works by itself. Exercise helps by burning calories, but it also speeds up your metabolism, and builds muscle, which burns up more blood sugar. Exercise is another habit. If you just walk for an hour three or four times a week, or ride a bicycle, after a while it becomes a habit and you find yourself craving it!

Finally, weight is not the criterion. If you change your habits, get into diet and exercise, you will feel healthier and just generally more capable. Losing weight is related but not the primary goal, it's almost more like a 'side effect', a by-product. If you weigh yourself every day, you can really get discouraged, because you will go long periods without seeing a change. Exercise creates muscle, which weights more than fat!

Question about weightloss?

So five years ago (at 15) I was about 120 pounds. I was very little and my legs had very little cellulite.

Now, here I am almost 20. I weigh 168.5 pounds. So my question was.. If I lose the 50ish pounds, will I look like my old self? Less cellulite on my legs and tiny.. or because I have so much cellulite it wont go away? I havent had any kids or anything so I feel like it should be possible.

Is 30 minutes twice a day on the elliptical too much

I just bought a precor 5.31 and want to lose 60 lbs. Is 30 minutes twice a day too much? How fast will I lose if I'm eating low carb and doing this?

Lose Weight, No Sweat!

Recommanded Answer:
It's too much. Too much cardio is bad for you. It just burns off your muscle tissue. The key to losing weight is cutting calories. Start with 1500 cals a day, track your cals on fitday.com Do cardio 3 days a week and pump iron three days a week. The easiest program to follow is the Body for Life Program by Bill Phillips. He recommends 20 minutes of cardio x a week but 30 is okay once a day. If the lifting is too much just cut it down to what you can comfortable handle. Figure on losing 1-2 lbs a week, that's doing good, if you lose more, you're just burning off muscle which you don't want to do.

  • No, that isn't too much. You do need to rest at least one day per week though.

Its hard to answer this: How hard are you pushing? Whats your weight/height? Machines usually have a number of calories burnt on display to give you a rough idea.
  • i would say if you feel like your nights rest is reviving you than no. if you are feeling like you have less stamina in general, than maybe. if you are over 250lbs i would say you should take it slow though. i have the opinion that it is very stressful on the body for people around 300lbs to be doing very much all at once. think of it as a bell curve graph, in other words, the more weight you loose, the more exercise you should be able to do safely. at first though, the circulatory system really strains. but no, if you are at a lower weight, i would not worry.
  • Prob not, unless youre pushing yourself super hard!
Its hard to tell how fast youll lose weight without knowing your stats, calorie intake and approx number of calories burned through exercise
  • No that is fine to do. You just have to make sure that you also consume enough food with carbs so you can have energy for when you work out. Proteins are also good to have, but i usually do that after my workouts. AND HYDRATE :D

cut down on calories and workout but you 13 thats not health to cut down

  • First off, don't stress about weight - it's easy to let yourself become obsessed with it. Best way to lose weight is to eat sensibly and be as physically active as possible - dull answer I know but there are no magic answers worth wasting your time with.

Once again, try not to keep weight-loss in perspective.

    Good luck!
  • 20 pounds = 70,000 calories.

Let's set the goal at 700 calories a day:

    1) Cut out 200 calories a day from your diet. This could mean substitution water for juice and soda, not using butter, and skipping the pasta and bread.

    2) Since walking a mile burns about 100 calories, walking five miles a day will take care of the other 500, for a total of 700 per day.

You will lose a pound a week, and it is so simple.
  • Hi, here is a simple way to do that;
Have some Special K at least once per day and have your fill of the many different types of Veggies salads out there at least twice per day. Alternate between Salad and Cereal as the mood arises and you should be on your way.
