What to do for the first day at the gym?

I havent been at the gym in years, but have done DVD workouts in that time. I havent worked out since March because of a family situation, but now Im ready to start a new routine. Im 5'5 and 160 pounds, female. Im mainly hoping to get rid of this baby belly (have an 11 month old), but also just get in overall shape to keep up with my kids! Whats your suggestion for first day/week at the gym? I'll only be able to go 3 days a week at most.

You should start by some walk / jog for warming up - 10 to 15mn to start of with and increase gradually time & speed. This will help you reduce fat (including belly fat) and improve your overall fitness. After that, do some exercises for various parts of your body. Ask the trainer for advice, but basically you should alternate one day legs & butt and back for example and the other, arms, chest and stomach. The exact details and weights are up to you, but I suggest starting slowly, and increasing weights over time. Usually it would be recommended to do 3 sets of each exercise, with about 10 to 15 repetitions, starting with a slightly lighter weight and increasing on the last set. Again, the best is to speak to a trainer for specific advice to you. But if your main objective is to lose fat, remember to combine cardio and muscle building exercises or else you'll just build muscle under the fat but it will never show ;-)Good luck!

  • It really depends what you capable of/feel like you can do. I think most people going back to the gym after a while would often just walk on the treadmill. Do a 30 minute fast walk etc. Or on the cross trainer.... just do whatever you feel like you can manage
