Is it bad to workout my abs right now?

Ok I use to weigh 205lbs and I now weigh 175lbs. Everything is going well but I don't really work out my abs because I still have a thick layer of fat on it.(Or in my eyes it's a thick layer) Anyways, I have read that you should start working on your abs when you have lost at least 55% to 65% fat in your stomach area because if I work on my abs now it will make my stomach poke out because my abs are pushing the fat on top outward which gives the pot belly illusion. Is this true? I would say I lost about 40% of fat in my stomach area. Should I start working my abs or will this not be a good idea?I am not at a point where I want to see my abs, I just want to make sure my mid section has a stable foundation.

It's about your body fat percentage. I believe it's something like below 10% is when you will start to see visible abs.
