Does a cat have to be fed once a day or get his meal twice a day?

I just got into an argument about this because I choose to feed my cat his meal amount once a day, I know I'm not wrong, and I as I have seen it is okay to give them their meal at once, and I don't think a cat really needs it split into two meals. Only when I give wet food I split it up so it won't dry out and he can eat the rest later. Am I wrong?, because I think people take care of their animals differently, I know some dogs get two meals a day, and others get one big meal, I've been around different owners, and whatever suits them i feel is alright. I basically have to get into arguments about this because my cat wines for food 24/7, even when he just ate and family members who don't own cats feel bad because he wines, I try to explain that that's all cats ever want is food and it doesn't mean they are starving their butts off because if I keep his bowl filled all day he easily gains weight. Do you Agree or disagree with me? How do you choose to feed your pet?

I feed the same amount of canned every day, usually split into 2 meals. They also get a quarter cup of dry but it goes into the puzzle ball dispenser so they have to work at it.Nothing wrong with once a day, as long as he's getting enough to eat. I like mine to have the second meal right at bedtime so they don't wake me up too early in the morning.

  • I fed my cat Cynthia- ONCE a Day, Every Day, for all 15 years of Her life. And She was never Overweight, and never MISSED a meal- once. ;)
  • I have a cat and a dog and they have dry food (crunchies) available to them throughout the day and I feed my cat crunchies whenever she asks for them however only feed them wet food once a day at night for dinner.
  • The important bit is not to let your cat get overweight - particularly tom cats which can suffer from urinary problems if they get too fat. Having said that it is also not good for them to be too skinny although old cats can be very slim and still be healthy just like old people. I have always fed my cats twice a day but with no goodies between meals and they have remained healthy with long lives.
  • There's no particular way you have to feed your cat as long as he seems satisfied and isn't hungry again soon after he finishes eating. I feed my cats twice a day but smaller portions. I feed them breakfast and then dinner. They seem to like it that way more than they did when I fed them only in the evening.
