12 miles on a mountain bike each day, calories burned?

I am going to start riding 12 miles per day on my mountain bike, it is an extended route of the 10 mile ride i used to do each day.The route has quite a few hills and some off road, although a lot of it is on the roads. I was wondering how many calories would i burn each ride, and whether it would be beneficial for weight loss and general fitness.I used to complete the 10 mile ride in about 50 minutes on average.Thanks.

How to Lose Weight in the Feet

There is NO exact way to tell - period. Everything is a "guesstimate". Some go by a flat 35 calories burned per mile. Others (like me) prefer this calculator from Bicycling.com - http://www.bicycling.com/caloriemain But NONE of them take into consideration hills, wind or what the exact terrain is. Here's a sure fire way to lose weight... Ride more & eat less. DIET & exercise. Diet is more important. http://shine.yahoo.com/summer-living/diet-vs-exercise-matters-most-152700978.html

  • As cyclists are so fond of telling us, riding a bicycle is one of the most energy-efficient methods of transport. So walk instead if you want to shift the lard.
  • It will help 12 miles is about 420 calories. Eat 600 calories less each day and lose 2 lbs a week. Your body gets use to the same routine so mix it up with extra hill climbing or longer harder rides.
  • I think Old Hippie has the best answer so far. As a former overweight person he really knows what it takes to trim down. 12 miles isn't enough riding to burn very many calories, you would also have to reduce the number of calories you take in
