Can I give my adult dog puppy food to help her gain weight?

My 9-year-old Chihuahua has lost about 1/2 a pound or sorecently (which is a lot when you''re 4 pounds!) She''s not sick or acting strange, she''s just lost weight and feels very boney. I''ve been feeding her more recently, but not seeing results. She goes to the vet next month... but in the mean time, can I give her puppy food? I know it''s more fattening. Thank you!

I wouldn''t do that. Instead, I would add canned food in the same kind that you are currently using. If you were feeding Science Diet kibble, for example, I would get a canned Science Diet adult to go with the kibble (or vice-versa.) Puppy food is high in protein, which can be very bad, espeically for a dog with kidney issues. At 9, there''s a good possibility it could be her kidneys causing this. Cancer has to be on the list, too, unfortunately.

This amount of weight-loss is huge. I''m assuming you were waiting until time for the annual shots, but I would cancel that one and get her in right away. They will need to run blood work and possible urine analysis as well. Any dog losing weight like that needs to be seen sooner than later. If your little dog has been eating her usual amount and losing weight all of a sudden, something is definitely wrong.
vet tech

  • Canned food will work
  • Your dog needs to be seen by a vet to rule out medical issues. Why are you waiting for a month to see the vet?
  • You should take her to vet. Veteranian usually sells special formulated food for dog to gain weight
  • Well puppy food contains more nutrients than adult dog food. It has extra calcium and proteins and fat. As your dog is 9 years now I suggest you consult a vet or a breeder before you give puppy food as it contains extra calcium and fat and it might cause some trouble to his bones.
  • No, puppy food isn''t enough for an adult dog it''s not fattening and it doesn''t have enough minerals/vitamins/nutrients etc.

You can find a weight gain food at a pet store. Make sure it''s for small dogs. If she''s 9 you might want to just put her on senior food that should also help keep some weight on her. Make sure she''s warm enough and don''t exercise her too much.
  • Try adding some raw or cooked egg yolks to her food. The egg yolks are high in calories. You can add two to her food for each meal. I''ve never known a dog to be allergic to raw egg yolks, although I have known one that was allergic to cooked ones! You can also give her raw bones for the delicious, fatty raw marrow inside. You can even just put some gravy on her food. Most dogs love gravy on top of dry dog food.
  • Take her to the vet maybe u need to change the food or something
  • You really need to see the vet, sooner (IMO) than a MONTH from now. 50% of all dogs age 10 & up end up with some form of cancer. Your dog is close enough to that age, for concern. Unexplained weight loss, and not seeing any GAIN in weight, despite feeding additional food, would SUGGEST Cachexia: Cancer weight loss (which often causes a 17-20% need for more calories) just to maintain the same weight.

Yes, you can feed puppy food. But there are specific, MORE helpful diets if your dog is fighting cancer.
  • Actually I''m 13 in 6th thx for the support to help me pass ;(
