What's a good brand of dog food to feed?

I have 2 small breed dogs that are 1. I feed taste of the wild but its a bit on the fattening side (roasted fowl 18% fat) anyways my Pomeranian started gaining a little weight from this food I've noticed (he isn't huge but he has gained a little) they do get walked 1-4 miles a day about 5 days a week. Anyways I'm not interested In raw but just high quality kibbles. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, most grain free foods are high in fat, so they might not be the best choice for you little guys. The exception is Blue Buffalo. They have a grain free food called Wilderness and it comes in a weight management formula.. It has 10% fat. A better choice might be their 'Healthy Weight' Life Protection formula. It does have brown rice in it, but it has only 6% fat.

  • I feed Taste of the Wild - the one with the Salmon. My Icelandic Sheepdog and my Keeshond each get 1/2 C twice a day and are in excellent weight.
  • pedigree and alpo
  • Try Orijen Or Acana regionals. http://www.orijen.ca/A commercial raw is also a healthy Choice:Primal raw frozen grinds Vital essentials Ziwipeak http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2010/07/21/13-pet-foods-ranked-from-great-to-disastrous.aspx
  • You have quite a few of high quality kibble options, here are a few:1) Orijen - great food, high in protein, grain free, GMO free, locally sourced ingredients from free range animals, no recalls ever that I am aware of. This is what I feed my dogs. Many varieties - puppy, puppy large, adult, six fish, and regional red. 2) Acana Regionals - made by the same company as Orijen, grain-free, slightly lower but still high protein. Comes in Pacifica, Grassland, Ranchlands, and Wild Prairie. 3) Blue Buffalo Wilderness - easy to find, high protein, grain-free. Not sure where ingredient come from but an easy choice for the average dog owner. Lots of variety as well. 4) Wellness Core - easy to find, grain-free, high protein, GMO free. Some variety as well - puppy, adult, large breed adult, reduced fat, small breed, ocean, and wild game. I have heard this is lower cost than both Orijen and Blue Buffalo Wilderness. Other options are: Merrick Grain-Free, Natures Variety Instinct with Raw Boost, I and Love and You Nude Food, Go! Fit&Free. I would feed less, the fat really isn't that high when it comes to a high quality dog kibble.Wellness Core Wild Game is 16% fat. That might be an option, although I don't suggest anything under 15%. http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/product-details.aspx?pet=dog&pid=157&dm=grainfree#guaranteed-analysis
  • I feed my dogs Earthborn natural dog food. It's really expensive but it's all worth it.-healthy-not fattening-good for the fur-
  • http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/This is the best dog food advice I have read.Highly energetic dogs should be fed a high protein food like the one you are using for your little dogs. Too much protein for your dogs and this makes it hard on their liver and kidneys. I have 5 at home, all small. I was using Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight (lower fat content) for small breeds until my Dad's dog came to stay. Thinking she has a grain allergy and switched to Wellness Core Healthy Weight.
  • I feed my dog pedigree chum he eats it up as soon as i put it down and it don`t make him fat.
  • Keep feeding what you're feeding, BUT FEED LESS of it.....problem solved.
  • Personally, I feed my mom's shih tzus Nutro Ultra. It is all natural with no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. It also has no corn, wheat, or by-products. Ultra is also a holistic formula so it will have ingredients such as blueberries, cranberries and pomegranates which are high in antioxidants which are great for your dogs immune system. It also has chicken, lamb, and salmon which makes the food smell more, and helps dogs to love their food. My mom's dogs are crazy for it and they are extremely healthy. My mom is likes how Nutro makes all of their own foods in their own USA facilities and do over 600 quality checks each day. I hope that helps!GeoffreyPet Nutrition Specialist for The Nutro Company

Math: Calculating score on nutrition?

Im gonna start counting calories, and so I have made a table of "accepted" food, such as chicken, tuna, oatmeal, sweet potatoes etc. In here I enter amount of protein, carbs, fats and fiber. There are some special things, like Omega-3, that I do not enter but instead add into a "standard meal" I eat every day. Anyway, for fun I have made a tab called "score" were Im giving each food a score out of how much nutrition compared to calories. I came up with the following formula myself:First I add together Protein x 4, Carbs x 4 and Fats x 9. Then I divide the results on amount of calories. Then I multiply by 100 to get a more "pretty" number.Im not using fiber in this cause I got no fair way of adding it. Basically Im just having this tab to make sure I actually get enough fiber a day. My question is, how accurate would these scores be? Is this the wrong way of concluding what food is better than others? Am I missing out on important vitamin calories? And how is the formula? All fats and carbs Im using is from healthy sources accepted in my diet. Whole grains, fish/olive oil etc. Here are some results from my score:Brown Rice: 99.86Sweet Potato: 93.49Sardins: 100Tuna: 97.92++++Shit, this aint gonna work :( Big Mac scored way too high on this, although I know the carbs and fats are the wrong kinds. I guess "empty calories" are something else than I though.. Back to research.

Plug your foods into an online food calculator that will break down the nutrition. I've used fitday.com but there's a bunch of them.Fiber has no calories & should be deducted from total carbs, unfortunately all the online food calculators don't have that included in their algorithm.I'm a proponent of low carb diets & highly recommend a fat based diet to maximize health. All carbs >9g per hour trigger insulin & insulin doesn't allow other hormones to function when it dominates the bloodstream. People think a low carb way of eating is for weight loss when actually it is for normalizing the body & allowing the body to finally function properly & is just as good for the underweight as overweight. This is an example of my idea of a near perfect 2200 calorie diet (70% of calories from dietary fats & 100% of RDA for all dietary nutrients) & a good example of Atkins life plan - I would actually include much more vegetables, but this is an example of the basics to cover 100% of RDA for all dietary nutrients. Males would need 2500 calories though. This has 108g total carbs but after subtracting fiber (which has no calories) only has 56g net carbs.Perfect diet - 4 cups Romaine lettuce2 med tomatoeshalf cup sweet red pepper1 cup kale1 avocado4 each strawberries1 oz raw Almonds1 oz chia seeds1 oz flax seeds3 oz raw sunflower seeds2T butterhalf cup coconut milk1oz cheddar cheese8oz plain yogurt1oz canned oysters (about 4)4oz can sardines2 lg eggs99g - protein56g - net carbs - 108g total carbs less 52g fiber170g - fattotal calories 2200200-1050% of RDA for all dietary nutrientsexcept - vitB6 - 174%niacin - 121%calcium - 113%potassium100%99g - protein20%56g - net carbs 10%170g - fat70%total calories 220052g fiberFat, Not Glucose, is the Preferred Fuel for Your Body http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2012/08/10/fat-not-glucose.aspxDr.Mercola - Why half your diet should be from saturated fats -http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/05/31/coconut-oil-for-healthy-heart.aspx?e_cid=20120531_DNL_art_1There never was one iota of scientific proof to condemn saturated fats as a cause of heart disease. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease, or any other chronic disease of civilization. Through their direct effects on insulin & blood sugar, refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease & diabetes.Plaque build up in the arteries are more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque, glycation - the precursors to a heart attack and heart disease.study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008)Postprandial lipoproteins, you'd think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it's carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/after-eating-effects-carbohydrates-vs.html

Your trainer is not using proper adjectives. Sumo wrestlers are athletes and getting fat is part of their training. Here's your ideal weight range --> http://www.calculator.net/ideal-weight-calculator.html?ctype=standard&cage=24&csex=f&cheightfeet=5&cheightinch=5&cheightmeter=180&x=26&y=5 . As you can see, your weight fits the norm for your sex, age, and height. So, you probably don't have a problem there. You can't measure your body fat percent with more than a few points (+/-2% accuracy) unless you use some very expensive techniques like the bod pod or x-ray absorption. But, if it's near 17%, you're normal and should have no fat concerns.Fitness and health are not about numbers, however. What it important is how you look, feel, and perform. So, you'll know best if you have any body work you need to do.Notwithstanding the above, you could use more muscle. Muscle gives you the following benefits.• Stronger bones & increased mineral density (osteoporosis protection)• Stronger body & musculature (improved protection from injury)• More robust organic and systemic fitness (more survivable in crisis) • Improved cardio-vascular function (better than "cardio")• Higher basal metabolic rate (~5-50 cal/day/pound of muscle)• Easier fat loss (more efficient lipid consumption)• Greater calorie consumption (prolonged afterburn)• Supports body sculpting (hypertrophy)• Slows natural loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) over age 30• Minimal wear & tear (low risk)Strength training is the only way you can get all the above. Cardio doesn't do it. So, I would urge you to work on strength so your above the norms on weight owing to an abundance of skeletal muscle. How to Lose Weight Fast - The Healthy Way

Dieting is never the answer. Just saying. Okay, now that we have that clear, I suggest that you just eat less and exercise more. In order to feel full, chew your food slowly. Or you can drink in the water after you swallow each bite. And for the mornings: eat some breakfast, then go outside and walk (if it's not extreme weather). Listen to your music. Listen to nature. You could also run. Running is much more effective. And if these don't work, then try the app calorie counter by myfitnesspal.com and keep track of what you eat. If you keep a food entry and record what you eat, you'll know the cause.

  • you dont really need to watch your calories just watch what you eat and get in a active sport football, soccer or just go jogging. i speak from experience when i was 11 i weighed around 300 pounds and was only 5'2'' now im only 150 athletic and 5'10. as for your face and skin yes it will thin and no your skin will not sag you might get stretch marks but it wont sag. Hope it helps
  • Yes that sounds like a good workout plan and diet for you. 1500 calories is a little low but i'm sure you wont have big problems. If you start to get exhausted more and more, you might want to start eating more and i will include a website link for you to to figure out your optimal calorie intake. You are a very tall guy and you have the ability to be a big, strong and handsome man when your older so don't give up! You have a lot of weight to lose and it's going to take time but the good thing is that you have a long time because you're only 13! As for your skin, because you are so young i believe that your skin will not get saggy and is quite elastic at this age.... it shouldn't be a problem at all. I was a big kid as well. I was around 5'10'' and 145lbs at your age and now look at me! You can do it man! feel free to email me if you have anymore questions, my email is on my profile page. • As a teenager, it's important to stay healthy and maintain a weight that is right for your body as you develop into an adult. A few extra pounds leads to various health conditions as you age, such as diabetes, sleep apnea and pregnancy complications, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Unfortunately, many teens turn to unrealistic diets that promise weight loss in an unhealthy way. To accomplish weight loss, you need to establish a lifestyle change, among other things.

How to Set Weight Loss Goals

Recommended Answer:

I'm done with my weight loss journey and completely happy with how I feel and how I look right now however losing weight is a challenge for anyone and even losing 5 pounds and keeping it off isn't an easy task. Also I bet you didn't know that 5 pounds of fat is about the size of 8 cheese burgers? That alone should be enough to make anyone want to get on the ball and start a change for the better. Weight loss can be really easy to learn but the problem is nobody wants to put the required effort that is needed to actually do it, instead people continually look for (easy) ways to do it. If there was an easy way to lose weight I don't think 35% of Americans would be obese. There was a time when I also wanted to lose weight and was tired of starting diets only to lose motivation and give up just a few weeks later after seeing no results. However, let me tell you it is literally one of the easiest things you will ever learn once you find a good and reputable place to learn it from and I say that only because the world is filled with magic diet pills, liquid flush diets and a thousand other quick fixes that promise xx pounds of weight loss in the first week and even though it is impossible they know you're going to do it because your desperate. I have probably tried every diet pill, liquid flush diet, and ab rocket machine known to man and have had no success with any of them nor do I know anyone that has ever had any success with them. I have also tried starving myself which works very well for the first few weeks' right before your metabolism comes to a complete stop and eating just the tiny bit makes you gain weight and you end up weighing more than you did before you started starving yourself. Companies promote weight loss to make money not to get people healthy again and that's because they know you're not going to be a customer and buy their products if you're no longer fat. http://fatloossfactor.com is a site I want you to go to when you have 10 or 20 minutes to spare and I want you to sit down and watch his video on weight loss. He helps people every day to lose weight I have never seen someone as committed as him and that will go so far out of his way to help someone. His weight loss program is one of the best I have ever had the enjoyment of doing and it is without doubt the best success I have ever had with any weight loss program. I also couldn't be happier with my body right now and I have never felt this wonderful in my whole life. In the end you just got to remember to stick with it and stay confident in yourself and in no time you can achieve the results you have always wanted. It's not hard to lose weight but most people have a hard time staying motivated and 9 times out of 10 it was because they weren't really committed from the beginning. Anyways I hope I helped you and I hope you make the commitment to change your body and life. Remember it's not easy to take the first step but you did, you're here right now taking it and the rest of the steps will fall into place. Have a wonderful day.

  • What do u mean by a little fat? Ur supposed to have some stomach on u. But I know u said running isn't an option but it really does help weight loss. That and swimming like at a gym. Also what I do is I limit how much junk food I eat. I only eat junk on special occasions and drink water with mostly everything I eat. Drinking sugary juices and pops can cause u 2 pudge up a bit. But also if u r starting ur . Soon ur stomach is gaining water so u may feel fat but ur really not. Hope this helped Cutie Pie Diva
