Why do people struggle with weight loss?

I've never been overweight myself but have not been particularly active in my youth and my only exercise I had during all of secondary school was 2 hours of PE which I usually lounged around in and didn't do a whole lot of exercise. I used to have terrible video gaming tendencies and I'd often say up the entire night playing games and playing video games for at least 50 hours a week and even more so during the school holidays. I was definitely addicted and maybe in a similar way that an overweight person eats too much food or doesn't exercise enough. Anyway, I've been aware of my unhealthy lifestyle for some time and finally decided enough was enough and that I want to live into my 90s so I've got a job on minimum wage (£3.68/hour) worked 200 hours and bought a road bike and I cycle around 150 miles a week and I have cut down my time on video games dramatically. However, one funny thing is is that I eat far more than I ever have and I've not changed the proportion of my diet at all and have even added an extra 6000 calories every week. All of this has required a bit of self-discipline but it's been a far easier journey than I ever thought and it didn't take much effort in the long-run (1 entire year). So what's the problem that 1 in 3 overweight adults have? Is it because I started to change my lifestyle when I was still young, 17 years old to be precise, or should I even be comparing my old lifestyle with that of somebody with weight issues to start with? I'm just kind of bewildered why other people lack motivation to do what I've done when it's really not required a lot effort in my opinion.

Lots of reasons.- It's an addiction. People get chemically addicted to sugar, salt and fat (often in combination) and their bodies crave it. If you're addicted to something it's not easy to just stop.- Food can help people block out other problems they have. When you're trying to block out something bad and not think about it, eating will help. We learn it when we're babies - whenever we cry someone brings us food, and food comforts us.- Low self esteem. A person might not believe they can change their situation. Whether you think you can or think you can't, you are usually right.- When you're heavy or out of shape, exercising is very uncomfortable. We are afraid of discomfort. It gets hard to breathe, you feel horrible, and it doesn't stop being uncomfortable until you've been doing it for at least 3 weeks. People don't want to put themselves through the pain. They don't think it ever gets easier. We are psychologically more interested in avoiding discomfort... even if there are great rewards far into the future. We want the results right now.- We think it's a matter of willpower. It's not. No amount of willpower will keep you doing something you hate, every day for the rest of your life. We have to learn to like exercise, and learn to like healthy food.- Other people are not always ready for overweight people to change. It makes them feel worse about themselves. This can lead to weird situations and sabotage.- If two people have met and fallen in love because they share the same problems, and one of them wants to get out of it but the other one can't or won't - then the overweight person has to choose between themselves and their spouse. It could end the relationship. That's a big step for someone who may not have believed in themselves at all in the past.- People are too busy today. If you work very hard, have kids etc, it's difficult to have the time and energy to change your life in your spare time.- People just don't know how to do it. They try to starve themselves or do something else that's just crazy and can't be kept up forever.- Some people have been overweight their whole lives, and are used to being "invisible". They're used to being ignored and left alone. If they lose weight and get attractive, suddenly they aren't invisible anymore - people start giving them attention they're not used to. They don't know how to respond. Even though they think they want it it can be very scary and make people go back to being fat. It's easier and more familiar.- People think losing weight means they can't eat their favorite foods. They convinced themselves they only like unhealthy food.etc, etc, etc. It's a pretty complicated problem.

  • You don't know until your in their shoes. Trust me i thought the same thing when i was slim like oh it's easy eat healthy and exercise but nope! Now i gotta lose 15-20 pounds and it's not easy! It promblebly is alittle. But really the hard part is sticking to it and kick out all the foods you love out of it. Trust me. i think this world is just like this.. When your slim it looks make it easy but when your kinda chubby or overweight.. it's not.. It takes alot of hard work that's why there's alot of overweight people in this world. But if you really want it, you work for it.
