How can I get my sick 4 month old kitten to eat food?

My kitten has feline leukemia and feline herpes. Even when he was healthy he would only eat about a can a day. He weighs 2.6 lbs and the vet wants him to gain a lot more weight. He's currently on interferon for the leukemia which makes his appetite even smaller. We've been trying to feed him high calorie paste but he doesn't really like it but goes crazy trying to eat people food. Is there anything I can do to get him to eat more? I really want him to have a fighting chance against his illness.

How to Be Lazy and Lose Weight

Recommended Answer:

Try him on some boiled chicken, along with some of the broth. Most cats just love chicken! Strangely enough, cats like boiled carrots. There is a canned cat food you can buy from the vet, specially made to feed to sick or underweight cats. I've never seen a cat refuse it. However, it's pricey for a can of food -- about $2 for one can. If he likes to eat people food, then let him eat it (with the exception garlic or onion), but don't put salt on it. Whatever he likes, to put on the weight.Meat baby food (the consistency for infants) is good, and cats like it (especially lamb). Pet-Tinic is a liquid vitamin mineral supplement with Iron that is especially good for anemic cats or cats on Interferon. I had good luck with Pet-Tinic with a cat on Interferon.

  • Maybe you have to force feed him until he gets over the illness. Just mix the wet food with water and squeeze it in his mouth. He needs all the nutrients he can get.
