Why do a lot of girls gain weight after high school?

I have been out of high school for 4 years. I have noticed that many of the girls that were thin in high school have blown up and gained weight.

I always assumed its because everyone starts driving everywhere and they eat terrible foods. That's the upside of not having a car I guess, I just walk everywhere and I like it. My roommate is a good example, she's overweight and every time I mention going somewhere, she offers to drive me and insists because she really thinks that its bad fsr, she says things like "No, I don't want you to have to walk! I'll just drive." And I'm always trying to convince her that I LIKE walking, lol. I went to a store with another friend of mine (who is overweight) and we finished with two full shopping bags each and she wanted to wait for the bus to come! We live about 4 blocks from the store, lol. I got her to just walk with me. Some people don't like their legs it seems lol. I've list weight since high school though, but I kind of think I had a better body back then tbh.

  • Freshmen 15
  • Because some girls have nothing to do after high school so they just sit and eat.
  • Peoples' metabolisms slow down in their early 20's. I don't care though because I like chubby women.
  • Watch people say thats not true. I worked at mcdonalds once. The only girls who had a body in there were all 16 and below. everybody 21 and up were fat, extremely fat. And some had the nerve to even hit on me or ask me out. Good god.
  • Girls gain weight because the adult world is far more stressful than teenage life, metabolism starts to slow down as we grow up so the things we could one eat now go straight to our thighs and we are in our prime child bearing age in our early 20s so we hold on to more fat. The biggest factor I believe is stress. I gained weight after high school because I moved out immediately, go a job, had a million bills, and went to school. It was stressful, not to mention the fact that a struggling young adult with little income can much more easily afford a cheap fattening meal than a light, healthy one.
  • If you don't have the discipline to workout on a regular basis, it happens. (for some it happens even if you consistently work out, like the girls I used to weight train with in high school).I used to workout religiously... then the stress of college, partying (lots of calories in drinking), sleeping in late, irregular daily schedules, etc. all of that weighs you down, literally. I didn't even mention the freshman 15 because not everyone has an issue with portion control. Even when you graduate... if you get a desk job (usually a better paying job than say being a retail sales associate or waitress) for the better part of the day you are sitting. Sedentary if you don't workout everyday. Our culture promotes a sedentary lifestyle that's hard to resist and very easy to get caught up in.
  • Puberty and metabolism.
  • Glad you asked. For starters, children and teens are growing, and that takes a lot of energy. It isn't uncommon for children and teens of both genders to be bottomless pits for food, and not appear to gain a pound. Super jealous, right? It catches up to them when they are finished growing in their early 20s and their metabolism slows way down. Sadly, their unhealthy eating habits do not change, and they pile on the pounds.Add to it the stress of work, college, possibly a bad marriage, raising children, and women's propensity to compensate for emotional distress by eating (endorphin rushes, it's complicated), and it's no surprise many women gain weight. But wait, there's more! Many women gain significant weight during and after pregnancy. This is partly due to insufficient exercise and over eating or eating unhealthy, but also partly due to the fact that a large portion of the female population suffers a slow down in the thyroid during and after pregnancy. Post pregnancy hypothyroidism isn't exactly uncommon, though it's believed to be severely under-diagnosed.Post partum depression includes all the main symptoms of depression, which in women also commonly includes weight gain.Depo provera, a popular birth control injection, also causes extreme weight gain as a rather common side effect.Mostly it boils down to poor stress coping mechanisms, poor diet, insufficient exercise (especially in stay at home moms), and failure to recognize or properly treat the underlying problem. Many of these problems happen in men as well, though.
  • Can't say I have noticed this, must be your area or something. The only time I see women blow up in weights are either when they are fast approaching 30 and above or they purposely let themselves go. Don't see a lot of fat early 20's women unless they really couldn't be bothered about fitness or something.
  • I've noticed this too but it happened to some of the guys as well. As a chick I have no idea. I lost after high school but that's because I had more to do in college. My guess is some chicks and guys don't have as active a life once the amateur sports etc are gone.
