How did the ideal body shape change so drastically over the years?

Body shapes. Not too long ago, the ideal body shape of a female was a little chubby - there was a woman featured on a Yahoo! Article not too long ago, and in 1913, Elsie Scheel (this is the woman that I am speaking of) was one hundred and seventy-one pounds at the height of five foot seven. She had the "perfect" body of that time.Nowadays skinny is in, and some are desperate to lose weight in order to be seen as beautiful. What would be considered "overweight" today was thought of as "perfect" back in the early 1900's. How did it change so drastically?

Its still is perfect. The media has made a big influence on women, fashion and modelling industries are run by gay men they dont know how to and have no desire to make women look attractive and they dont care whether the way they portray women is even healthy so long as it sells. But in a way the fashion ideals hasnt changed much because its only young men who try to impress each other by getting a girl (who's striving to accomplish the gay mans image of women) because its in the magazines but when they mature (some early - mid 20's) they start hunting for curves when their real ma instinct kicks in. There was a study that showed women thought what a man found attractive was 3 inches taller and 2/3 dress sizes smaller than what men actually liked which was size 10/12 pear/hourglass at 5ft4-6 depending. So women thought they needed to be a size 4/6 rectangle and at least 5ft7-5ft10 to be attractive.

  • Clothing designers, trends, media, etc.
  • in early times plump women were sign of health and wealth. Being poor made many thin and not develop body parts. Small breast and almost no rear end. So the wealthy were the thicker girls. After the world wars and modern farming we have lots of food. So body development changed. Women have larger rears and huge breast. There are many men with idea of the perfect female body. Few are what books and moves show as perfect. Most men desire a women with some curves and comforts. I recall an uncle born in early 1900's. He liked big women and the bigger the better. I ask why? you look for a women like a hog, the fatter the better the meat. Thats 1900's thinking.
  • Men's preferences changed
  • From Marilyn Monroe curves, then Kate moss skinny, next the future will be skeletal ..blame these sill phoney "fashion designers" I studied fashion and these people use skinny anorexic models because making patterns for real women would take alot more time and effort, need I say more...they are lazy
  • Because during the times of The Beatles and Grateful Dead there was a model named Twiggy who made skinny trendy. I remember doing a group project in US History about the 60s and one of the group members wrote about Twiggy. Anyways the main reason why so many runway models, or models in general are so skinny today was because of that woman.
  • maylin monroe was, is, and always will be the ideal female body shape
  • Im not sure; that's a good question. All i know is that i can't control whom I'm attracted to. I don't think I'd find any 170lbs women to be attractive. I'n my opinion personality is more important. But part of a persons personality is if they take care of them selves or not.
  • well people seem to want a body type that is unrealistic to have.in the early 1900s being curvy and thin at the same time was in a thin body with curves was popular.well in the 90s and 80s big shoulders were popular now a more being thin but not manly is popular.today they average woman in America has a 35 inch waistline while women were slimmer ages ago.
  • Found out slimmer is healthy, but "skinny" is the ideal body: beautiful.
