Is it normal for a person undergoing chemotherapy to lose weight fast?

Im currently on chemotherapy to treat my hodgkins lymphoma, the chemo seems to be working as it has shrunk the large lump i had in my neck after the first few rounds of chemo. But the problem is im losing alot of weight fast. I used to weigh 183 last month now im down to 170. Im worried. The reason im losing weight is because i no longer have an appetite and everything i put in my mouth tastes bitter. Im frustrated i cant enjoy my fsvorite foods. Also i suffer from stomach pains which makes it harder to eat. Im 20 years old (male) and so far ive completed 4 chemo sessions, i got 8 more to go and i dont know what will happen if i keep losing weight.

How to Lose Weight with Thyroid Problems

You have stopped eating as much. You are going to lose weight. I lost about 20 pounds over 9 weeks of chemo treatment. To top it off, your body is working really hard at recovery. If you are throwing up or have diarrhea, then you are also losing water weight. You need to stabilize your weight loss. The simplest thing is to augment your food intake with protein shakes. Ensure is the dominant brand on the market, but there are others. If they are available in your area, I liked the Orgain brand because they were more drink-like and less shake-like. I like the Ensure strawberry flavor and the Orgain vanilla and mocha. Also, I found that chemo altered certain tastes dramatically, and not others. I could not eat any carbs because they tasted terrible. No bread, pasta, potatoes... After I figure that out, I would order a hamburger with a lettuce wrap or eat salads with chicken and cheese instead of sandwiches. I also found a preference for very bold flavors like citrus and vinegars, so I really liked salads and Vietnamese food. Experiment and find things you like.Finally. You are losing weight. Eat. Eat junk if you need to and it tastes good. At this point in your life, calories are calories. Get a milkshake. Peanut butter is full of protein. Try not to eat 100% junk, you need a good balanced diet, but get those calories in your body. You need them.

  • What's normal depends on the particular chemo drug you are taking. You can look up the side effects of the drug on the web or ask your oncologist. However, it is common to lose weight while on chemo therapy. Chemo generally works by interfering with cell grow, and it often has nearly the same effect whether its a cancer cell or normal cell. Normal tissues that have high rates of cell growth often experience a lot of damage from chemo. The cells that line the digestive tract are normally replaced every few weeks, so they are relatively fast-growing and vulnerable to effects of chemo. When the lining of the digestive system is injured nutrients are not absorbed as readily, so a lot of the nutrients pass through without being absorbed. People often need to compensate by eating foods that pack a huge amount of calories. Call your oncologist and ask if you can get a referral to a nutritionist.

How to Fast to Lose Weight

Recommended Answer:

The key to fat loss is not exercise, it's diet.Any exercise will burn calories but no exercise will burn fat unless your diet allows it. You can burn fat in your sleep or you can run all day and never burn any fat. It all depends on your diet. Fat loss is determined by calorie control, not by exercise. Good exercises for burning calories are speed walking, biking, swimming, dancing, etc. and ANY other physical activity which makes you move a lot of weight for a long time. But NO exercise is good for burning fat if you eat too many calories because you can always eat more calories than you can burn but you can't always burn as many as you take in.Too many people waste energy and time because they do not understand this one simple point. The result is too often giving up in frustration, abandoning gym memberships they continue to pay for, and many other unnecessary problems not the least of which is a lack of success. An average person must walk about five miles every day for a week to burn the calories equivalent to a pound of body fat. So, unless you think walking about five miles a day (or doing an equivalent amount of exercise) with no guarantee of fat loss makes sense, focus your fat loss program on diet.Diet for fat loss. How to Set Weight Loss Goals

You would lose alot in the first few days, but since your metabolism would crash, your body would return you by turning things into fat. It would significantly lower your metabolism.

  • I think you mean that you will consume only water for 25 days. If so, this is risky and will put your body into starvation mode and ketosis. Ketosis causes your kidneys damage and can kill you. Once your body is in ketosis you will drop pounds rapidly--maybe fourteen in the first week? Then your body will try to hold on and may bloat. Once you begin eating, your body will store as many calories as it can as fat.....

Is taking medication for anxiety always a bad thing?

People talk about these drugs (SSRIs) like they are just the worst thing ever and doctors give them out like candy....but what about if you really need them? I have been on Zoloft 50 mg for 3-4 years for anxiety and it has helped soooo much! But after a recent blood test where it may be affecting my thyroid, I decided to go down to 25 mg. After being on 25 mg for 3 weeks, I am a huge bundle of nerves! I constantly feel nauseous (it's not withdrawals, I already had those the first week) and I just feel VERY VERY anxious. I haven't been eating the same as usual and I've lost 10 pounds. When I do eat, it takes me a while cause I'm so panicky and nervous. I had a major panic attack earlier and as soon as I took my medicine (maybe 30 mins after) I was fine and so much more relaxed. I know natural is better but some people do need medication for certain things...so is it really a bad thing? I know I have the thyroid issue to deal with but besides that...is the medication a bad thing if it's helping me and I act terrible on the 25 mg? I mean, I'm in college and I'm getting ready to move into an apartment for the first time. Kinda need the medicine.

How to Lose Weight Fast With No Pills or Equipment

As a former medicine user of depressant anxiety pills I would advise you to keep taking it as you are making a new life change moving into your apartment. Once your moved in and comfortable start weaning off your medication .( I know it'll be hard) my doctor took me off my celexa after taking it 6 months. I had an attack after getting off it but, I became more weary of my body signs, I can tell when I'm nervous and what to do. For example , I would get most nervous when I'm laying down in bed or even thinking about still(even writing this) I would turn on some beach sounds and imagine myself in that setting like the taste, sound , and feel of the beach calmed me down. When I'm in a public space and I get nervous I say to myself "come on man what am I over reacting about" then I take a deep breath and try to forget about it. Your young as well and I know you can make these changes. Good luck. I hope this helps .

  • Zoloft is a safe drug to be on so don't worry about that. However it may be affecting your appetite in a negative. It is not uncommon for Zoloft to affect someone's appetite. Take to your doctor.
  • google Zoloft dose range for guidance and return to 50
  • I don't think that the zoloft is affecting your thyroid.. unless its back to normal again.I would suggest trying something else if it affects your thyroid. And no, ssris aren't bad if you really need them like myself (i take 80mg of prozac for OCD). Its just that we don't know what ssris will do to us but snris are the meds that most people have trouble with because they're hard to get off of.You should try a benzo. Those aren't necessarily bad either. It's just that some people abuse them or get hooked on them so be careful.

Should I euthanize my cat or put him through more testing?

So, since December my cat has been acting "strange" He was always meowing like he was hungry, even though he was being fed 3 times a day, and he was losing a lot of weight, and he always had diahrea. I took him to the vet, and he ran numerous blood tests on him and everything came back normal, although he thought my cat was possibly in the beginning stages of Hypothyroidsm. The blood tests cost me $250, and they would've cost $295, but my vet gave me a discount for waiting so long for the results. He suggested I change his diet to a more holistic one, and I changed it to Wellness. My cat was doing great for a good 3 months. He stopped meowing for food all the time, and he gained weight, plus his poop was normal. Then it's like things just went downhill. Lately all my cat has been doing is sleeping, constantly meowing for food, and now he's not even using his litter box. He'll go in front of the door, or in front of the tv, and now he's been going right outside of the basement. Unless we take him to his litter box or chase him away from those areas, he won't go. Now it seems like poop just runs right out of his rectum, like he can't even hold it. My cat is about 15 or 16yrs old. My Grandma says it's not fair to do testing on him considering he's an old cat, and it would be best just to put him down. I'm at a stand still. I personally don't think it's fair to put him down, whenever there might be an easy fix to this condition. But then I think maybe I'm the one being selfish, and it's his time to go. I am going to make an appointment with the vet, but I don't know if I should make it for testing to see what's wrong, or if I should make it for euthanizing? I personally don't want to be there if we decide to euthanize. Last June, we put my 13yr old Golden Retriever to sleep in the back of our car, and I was there during the whole process. It was one of the hardest, most painful things I've ever gone through. Plus, my cat and golden retriever were like best friends..so I really don't think I could go through it again. =/My last cat lived to be 21yrs old, actually he was my Dad's cat he had since he was 16yrs old...so I guess I'm just used to having cats that live fairly long. I didn't know the average age for a cat was 13yrs old..wow. A lung infection? No he doesn't have trouble breathing, but his sides are sunken in.

How to Run to Lose Weight

Recommended Answer:

Definitely make an appointment with the vet for testing and discuss his symptoms and possible prognosis with your vet. This could be unrelated to his prior problem and easily fixed or it could be the worst. Simple blood tests and x-rays are not very stressful for your cat and shouldn't require sedation. Unfortunately, you are the owner and as such, the decider. Get as many facts as you can and then make a decision based on that, keeping the quality of life for your pet as the foremost concern.

  • I'm not really "for" euthanizing. I liken it to murder. and pets are family... We don't euthanize our human family do we?
  • I actually just had this problem with one my cats and we put her to sleep last year. She had the same symptoms, blood test was normal and the vet mentioned an ultrasound. She was an older cat (12 at the time, was 13 when we put her to sleep). We didn't do the ultrasound and thought it was stress (we had just gotten two kittens and she hated them). My mom thought she had...can't remember what it's called now, but it's s condition that makes cats have diarrhea. She also switched them all to wellness. Eventually she started getting UTI's CONSTANTLY so my mom decided to put her to sleep. We think it was her kidney's since the blood test was normal.I'd mention your concerns to your vet and maybe ask to get her kidney's checked. Honestly, if the blood test is normal and it's something more serious that requires surgery I'd put her to sleep. She's too old to go through that and probably wouldn't even live through going under and surgery.
  • I had to put my dog down when she was eighteen. Once they get past sixteen they begin to have those problems. My pets have had organic food all their lives and have lived so long, you can really tell the difference. My cat is my best friend and I could never possibly imagine having to put her down. It is really hard. It is really sweet of you to spend so much money to try to save your cat. A lot of people I know wouldn't spend that much fir their pet. Cats can sometimes get skinny when they have a heart infection or lung. Fluid could be filling up in their lungs making it hard for them to breathe. Have you noticed your cat breathing funny while he sleeps? He my not be getting skinny but his sides could be sinking in, another sign of lungs filling up. This time around it could be an actual disease rather than a reaction to the cat food. You should take him to the vet one more time and see if he can find something different and maybe keep your cat healthy a little longer. It is really your decision. I think your cat will let you know when it's time. I'm sorry about your kitty.
  • First your cat is old most cats only live to be about fourteen if your lucky sometimes they can live 20-25 years but its rare have your vet test for worms but most likely its your cats time to go we have a 13 year old tigger in our home my brother got him as a kitten when he was four and we are all dreading the day he may go for a walk and not come back or worse that we will have to take him for his last vet visit ive seen animals die cats included (ferrets are the hardest they can scream for hours) so i know how you feel but ask yourself is it better to let him go now or do you want to see him waste away slowly
  • My heart goes out to you. Some of my cats have died in their sleep, others I have had to put down because of kidney failure or whatever. You should discuss this with your vet and make your decision based upon your vet's prognosis and on the quality of your cat's life now.
  • There are two types of testing - invasive and non-invasive. If you can afford it, I'd suggest the non-invasive testing so that you can make an informed decision. Things like x-rays and ultrasounds do not hurt the cat or require any kind of surgery, and will show masses or potential masses. Most indoor kitties live between 14-17 years, I'd dispute that 13 year average. Just like humans, some live to be very old, some not so old. I'd go with at least a basic abdominal x-ray (generally $65-125) and based on that, discuss the value of an ultrasound with the vet. If the x-ray clearly shows something "bad" then you stop there. If not, then the ultrasound would be next, but those are more expensive ($250-400). It's a very difficult decision to make - so without what ever non-invasive testing you can afford, you will always be second guessing yourself.
