I want to lose fat not muscle?

I'm a 19 year old male weighing in at 229 pounds (105 kg). About a year ago I was 180 pounds. I now have a huge beer belly with stretch marks courtesy of NZ's drinking age and my face is very chubby and, essentially, I would like to lose this fat. I am currently doing a pretty extreme diet (in my view) with high protein intake whilst cutting back on saturated fat, sugars and cholesterol. Total calorie intake would be between 1500-2000. Also, to cover essential vitamins I'm just resorting to supplements. I am doing daily runs plus press ups, crunches etc. Is this enough to ensure that I do not lose muscle instead of fat? I'm not expecting a six-pack but overall strength is important to me. Thanks!

  • Weight loss is a buzz word these days, it seems we are all on a weight loss program. This is with good reason, as more people are overweight than ever before – it is estimated that around 70% of men and 62% of women are carrying excess fat and many are obese leading to severe health problems such as diabetes and heart disease which is on the increase at an alarming rate.Living in a family of overweight adults flows down to children with 26% of our youth being overweight or obese. This has a devastating effect on their health and well being, in some cases causing diabeties at a young age,Dieting is a controversial subject surrounded by a lot of myth. There are many programs that can assist with weight control but not all are suited to all people. • The biggest reason that you'll lose muscle rather than fat is because you're limiting your calories. If your body feels like it is in starvation mode it'll do everything in its power to prevent fat burning. Also, think of your body as a machine able to burn four different types of fuel: - Alcohol - Carbohydrates - Protein - FatThe body preferentially burns these fuels in that order. So if you are trying to burn body fat then you need to limit the intake of the fuels higher on the list. Beer is high in alcohol and carbohydrates. If you drink a lot of beer you will not burn fat (you'll store it as you've already suggested). The biggest trick is to limit carbohydrates - no sugar, wheat, flour, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, cereals - whole meal or white. But the most important thing for burning fat is to provide fat in the diet. As I said your body is a machine. If you tune the machine to burn fat then it will burn both dietary fat and stored fat. You tune the body to burn fat by eating fat.Do the research on the latest thinking on fat - fats, like butter, lard & coconut oil, are good short- and medium- chain saturated fats. It's the long-chain saturated fat you want to avoid and trans fats, like margarine, vegetable oils & seed oils.So you should be eating saturated fat and avoid carbohydrates if you want to lose weight. If you eat 2g of protein per kilogram of body weight then that'll help maintain muscle mass.Take a look at low carb high fat diets - or paleo diets. I've lost 24kg and it's staying off.
