What makes McDonald's and KFC more successful than other fast food restaurants?

i live in Asia and visited the US this year, i've been to a number of fast food restaurants there which serves much better burgers and fries than McDonald's and KFC. What makes McDonalds and KFC become a huge franchise instead of other fast food places which i've never heard of in countries outside US?
