How long until I notice result from working out?

I am a 16 year old female. I have never really played sports. I did dance for 5 years and never really thought it kept me in shape because I never tried that hard, but now two years after quitting, I'm noticing a difference. I am skinny and have always been skinny. I am 5'4" and I weigh 90 lbs. I eat normally but I don't exercise. I have a little stomach pooch (always have, but I know it will go away with effort) and love handles. I am starting to lose tone, especially in my thighs and butt, and I'm getting noticeable cellulite. I just had jaw surgery 6 weeks ago and was on a total liquid diet. I lost about 7 lbs but have gained most of it back. After this surgery I've noticed my butt is a lot smaller, which is not a good thing, and my pooch and everything else seems to remain the same. I am planning on going to the gym and doing a lot of bicycles, leg press, elliptical, etc. I also want to start doing a lot of pilates (crunches, squats, push-ups, leg lifts, etc). I didn't really want to do a bunch of cardio because my goal is not to lose weight. So what do you suggest I do as far as a workout to tone and not lose weight? How long until I will start to notice toning results since I am slim and am not wanting weight loss?

It's entirely possible to see some results within a couple of weeks. But don't get too hung up on the aesthetics. Human beings in general tend to have an overly critical perception of their own bodies in the mirror compared to other people's bodies. Don't worry, you will see the difference but more importantly you will FEEL the difference. There's nothing like waking up every morning and just having that feeling that your body is in great shape and able to take care of you. Your intentions sound good - stationary bike, leg press, elliptical, etc all the things you mentioned sound good. I would remind you not to neglect the free-weights. A lot of women think that weight training will make them "bulk" or they're just plain hesitant to do it because they feel like weights are for men. Both of these assumptions are wrong, and weight training is actually a great way to tone and get back that athletic look that you are looking for. Glad to hear that you'll be doing squats. I'd suggest incorporating some upper-body free weight workouts as well. As for cardio, I get what you're saying but of course some degree of cardiorespiratory conditioning is important no matter what your goals are. You should at least be doing 10 to 30 minutes of moderate cardio at the gym on a treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical, stair master, etc. On a side note, as a man cellulite isn't my area of expertise but I was always under the impression that a dermatologist could usually help you with that in some way. But you're 16 so it could just be puberty and exercising should help as well. Just trying to help lol. Best of luck to you.

  • You will get results right away, but it comes little by little. You can't expect everything to come at once. But slowy but surely it shall come!Hope this helps, good luck!
  • A good routine which includes squatting and a good diet will work wonders, give it 2 weeks and you'll feel a lot more in shape! :-)
  • You do not get results right away. That was ridiculous thing to say.Take a picture of yourself right now. And take a picture of yourself in a month. Its the best way to see the results you've gained.Around a month is when you will see noticeable results, but nothing drastic. These things take hard work and dedication.
