What''s wrong with my chinchilla?

So I''ve had him about three months. He has stopped eating as much food, especially his pellets however he is eating quite a bit of hay. He''s drinking and his poop is fine. We also gave him some broccoli last night which he ate really quick. He keeps grinding his teeth even though he has plenty of toys to chew on and he has started chewing his fur even though I give him a dust bath 2-3 times a week. He seems less energetic, when he comes out his cage he doesn''t run as much and he is also much more willing to be stroked and comes and sits on me a lot more and he even let me pick him up the other day.

Is he okay, I''m just worried because he''s acting different.
I don''t think he''s lost any weight and the room is about 15 degrees C

I think that if you are ever worried, then don''t hesitate to take him to the exotic vet. Chinchillas should be eating more hay than pellet, and unless you have changed his pellet (which should be a slow process) and his poo is fine, then don''t worry so much.

What you need to stop doing is feeding him produce. Chinchillas aren''t supposed to have fruit and veg, else they can get bloat and possibly die. They aren''t meant to have a moist diet.Give healthy treats like rose hips, plain cheerios and unfrosted shredded wheat.

  • Probably he''s just lonely? Get a friend for him. :)
  • You should not be giving him broccoli. But I would check his teeth to make sure there aren''t any problems. But if he hasn''t lost weight, that''s a good sign.
