Are there any diets that will help me lose 20-30 pounds?

I can't exercise at the moment. (It's a VERY long story), and I want to start losing weight. I don't want to cut my calorie intake too low because I don't want to lose muscle. I was thinking about going on a low carb high protein/fat diet, but I don't know how effective that really is.Can anyone help me out? Thank you.
